Creating a Safe, Sacred Space

A place to feel connected with your authentic soul-self.

There are many ways to help yourself feel safe and secure, and few are as primary as creating an environment that you can return to time and again. A space that nurtures you is like a longtime trusted friend.

In this space, you will find…

  • silence, so you can reach into your imagination.
  • colors and textures, so you feel soothed and grounded.
  • objects that bring meaning.

The purpose is to create a space reflecting your inner world and to support you in a powerful experience of peace, which brings a sense of security.

Identify your place for sacred space.

Your place doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive.  It simply needs to be a place where you can go to honor yourself and find solitude. It can be an entire room, a bedroom corner, or a favorite outdoor location.

Sacred space has boundaries. Like a true friend, it respects all of you, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Your sacred space provides the opportunity to explore your innermost world undisturbed.

A sacred space is a sanctuary where you can meet yourself without interference. Interference isn’t limited to people.  Life has all sorts of interferences. Being busy, distracting thoughts, social media, housecleaning, work, and texting are just a few ways we interject interference into our lives.

Give your sacred space love.

Whether you already have a place you utilize as sacred space or are inspired to create one, consider the following tips to make the space even more fresh, beautiful, and grounding.

  • Paint walls in colors that bring you joy.
  • Add objects that are meaningful that your eye loves to explore.
  • Ensure the lighting is soft and soothing.
  • Add candles for a warm glow that enhances the sacredness of your space.
  • Include soft pillows and throws for comfort.
  • Bring in nature with plants and flowers.
  • Rearrange the furniture to shift the energy and create a new flow.
  • Remove what doesn’t align with your serenity.

These changes shift energy. Be intentional. Make sure you choose what to do or not do for your comfort and connection to the place, not driven by the ascetics, to make it pleasing, or to please others. As you rework or build your sacred space, notice the emotions you feel as you begin to experience this space just for you.

Check-in regularly with your body to identify calm, joy, or inspiration as you sit in this space. How this exterior you’re creating for yourself affects you is exactly why you are building it. What your felt experience is makes this space sacred. This space may not be sacred to others, it is what it means to you.

Your body is a sacred space.

That may feel contradictory if you’ve been working most of your life to disconnect from your body, but your body holds your truth, your soul’s truth. If you find yourself relating to your body per cultural norms using shame to force it into submission, from this moment forward, I encourage you to begin to relate to your body as the sacred space that it is. Be lovingly curious about it. Like a new friend, take the time to develop a relationship by listening, supporting, and being present to you.

The deeper purpose of the sacred space that is a place is to reflect and influence your inner journey to finding the sacred space that is your physical self. Your sacred place and your budding friendship with your body are a symbiotic relationship. The ultimate sacred space is the one that you carry with you throughout your entire journey as an incarnate soul – your body.
